01Scope
This policy applies to everyone using PilotLookup — through the API, batch uploads, the live demo or the dashboard. It forms part of our Terms of Service. If you let others use your API key, their conduct is your responsibility.
02What the service is for
PilotLookup exists to help you make accurate routing and data-quality decisions. Typical uses include:
- Checking a number is valid and reachable before sending an SMS or placing a call.
- Routing messages away from landlines to cut failed deliveries.
- Flagging VoIP numbers during signup as one fraud signal among several.
- Cleaning and deduplicating a CRM or contact list you already lawfully hold.
- Enriching your own records with carrier and line-type context.
03Prohibited uses
Unlawful calling and messaging
- Any use that breaches the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the Telemarketing Sales Rule, CAN-SPAM, or the equivalent law in your jurisdiction.
- Calling or texting numbers on a Do Not Call registry where you have no applicable exemption.
- Robocalling, ringless voicemail drops or autodialling without the consent the law requires.
- Caller ID spoofing, SMS sender spoofing, or any attempt to disguise who is contacting someone.
- Sending, or preparing to send, spam, phishing, smishing or fraudulent messages.
Harm to individuals
- Stalking, harassing, threatening or intimidating anyone.
- Locating or identifying a person who does not want to be found, including doxxing.
- Any use in connection with domestic abuse, coercive control, or evading a protective order.
- Discriminating against people on the basis of carrier, line type or location.
Prohibited decision-making
- Using results as a factor in eligibility for credit, insurance, housing, employment or education. PilotLookup is not a consumer reporting agency and results are not consumer reports under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
- Emergency service routing, or any safety-critical system, as the sole source of truth.
Misuse of the data or platform
- Enumerating number ranges to reconstruct or mirror our dataset.
- Reselling, sublicensing or redistributing raw results without a written agreement with us.
- Building a competing carrier-lookup service from our output.
- Sharing API keys across organisations, or circumventing rate limits or credit metering.
- Probing, scanning or attempting to breach the service or another customer’s data.
04Your obligations
- Have a lawful basis for every number you submit — consent, contract, or another basis that applies where you and the data subject are.
- Honour opt-outs and suppression lists in your own systems.
- Keep your API keys secret and rotate them if exposed.
- Only upload the columns you need. If a file contains data beyond the phone column, you are responsible for it being lawful to store.
- Tell us promptly if you discover misuse of your account.
05How we enforce this
Where we find a breach, our response is proportionate to the harm:
- Warning — for a first, low-harm issue we will contact you and ask you to correct it.
- Rate limiting — we may throttle traffic that destabilises the service.
- Suspension — sign-in and API access are blocked while we investigate. Your data, credits and history are preserved and access can be restored.
- Termination — for serious or repeated breaches. Unused credits are forfeited where the termination is for cause.
- Referral — we will cooperate with law enforcement where conduct appears criminal.
We act immediately and without warning where there is a risk of harm to a person, to the platform, or to other customers.
06Reporting abuse
If you believe someone is misusing PilotLookup, write to abuse@pilotlookup.net with as much detail as you can. We review every report and will acknowledge it within two business days.
If you believe your own number was looked up unlawfully, contact privacy@pilotlookup.net — see GDPR & Data Rights for what we can and cannot tell you.
